Ryckman’s Report: March 2024

Hey look, I’m bringing this back!

A few years ago, I started trying to consistently post a monthly blog post – basically a monthly newsletter. Due to the stresses of teaching and the pandemic, it got postponed. HOWEVER, now that things have settled a little bit more and life is (a little) less chaotic than before, I’m bringing it back!

So What’s Going To Be In This?

Well, hypothetical reader…that’s a good question! I’m going to try to keep it to mostly author-y things, but I might throw in the occasional teaching or gaming nugget, since those are two important areas of my life. Let’s go ahead and get started!

There’s a lot to talk about, first of which is: I’m publishing another book in June!

Arikala Academy: A Wave of Courage is the first book in a new middle-grade fantasy series. Here’s the synopsis:

Courage is the most powerful magic of all.

At eleven years old, Cassidy Farron knows two things for certain: that her time at Arikala Academy, the magical school for gifted youngsters, will be the best ever; and that everyone in her family has ALWAYS been placed in House Sword.

But after a disastrous first day ends in orientation being attacked and she’s sorted into House Shield, Cassidy finds that she has to reevaluate her expectations. After all, why would somebody want to attack such a wonderful place?

Determined to prove her worth and get to the bottom of things, Cassidy will team up with an orphaned spellcaster and a tech genius to uncover the mysteries surrounding themselves and the school. But some secrets might be better left alone…

Featuring giant spiders, action-packed adventure, and a herd of corgi-dragons, Arikala Academy: A Wave of Courage is where Witchlings and The Owl House meet Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Cover reveal coming soon! But you can already preorder the book and add it on Goodreads (see the buttons below). ARC signups are coming soon!

Almost a year of LoST

We’re quickly coming up on the 1-year publishing anniversary of my debut novel, Legend of Samantha Torres. It has certainly been a learning experience: figuring out how to actually self-publish in the first place, learning how to handle marketing, and even doing in-person author events! While it’s been a whirlwind, it’s also been an absolutely fantastic experience, and I am so excited to continue my publishing journey this year with the release of Arikala Academy.

What I’m Reading

Murtagh, by Christopher Paolini
